About Extended DISC International

Clyde

Extended DISC was created in 1994 by Jukka Sappinen. Jukka attended the Helsinki School of Economics and spent his early professional years educating clients in utilising psychological tools. A profound understanding of the gap between existing tools and corporate needs enabled Jukka to develop what his clients were looking for: an instrument that combines a range of valuable analyses, forming a simple, unified system that can be used to generate understandable, integrated information on an individual, team, or entire organisation.

Between 1994 – 1997 (the early years of the company), time was spent honing the system in Finland with the cooperation of key clients and experts in psychology, statistics, HR, consulting, and IT. In 1997, the company’s first international franchise was set up in the USA, still a major market.

The company has always been a technology leader in the industry. It was the first one to introduce Windows based software system (compared to the old dos systems). Similarly, it was the first to introduce an online solution to enable completion of the questionnaires online in 1999.

One of the top five companies in the field today, Extended DISC International has spread to over 50 countries, with an annual growth rate of 20-50%. The Extended DISC® System has been translated into 55 languages and was used by over a million people in 2008.

“We recognise that the most satisfied people work at the best companies. Our goal is to provide our clients with the information they need to keep their best and brightest motivated and make the most of their strengths, which helps to ensure a better future for all.” – CEO Jukka Sappinen

Extended DISC International is awarded a Triple A Credit Rating by top Finnish Credit Rating’s Agency Soliditet.  Extended DISC International has been awarded a AAA credit rating by leading credit rating’s agency Soliditet. The rating is based on Soliditet’s automatic rating system. It is robust system, in which the company’s operation, background, the worldwide and domestic economy and the method of payment information is systematically collected to analyse the firm’s creditworthiness and its ability to cope with normal business-related commitments.

History

The Extended DISC system is based on the 1920′s psychological theory of Carl G. Jung. His ideas were based on defining two behavioural axes; feeling – thinking and sensation – intuition and the four main traits that they compose. William Moulton – Marston developed Jung’s ideas and defined a four dimensional behaviour map.

Carl Jung - Psychologist

From these theories combine the four – quadrant thinking of human behaviour. This structure is being used in many management, sales and leadership training techniques. Variations of the theory exist including eight or sixteen categories instead of just four. However the over simplification of behaviour and its classifications have proven to be a weakness in these systems.

At the end of the 1940’s and the beginning of the 1950’s the original DISC reference framework was developed, this development helped in the elimination of weaknesses in the system. By returning to the former or less developed state of the system it could be analysed more thoroughly. This involved separating the combined four basic behavioural styles from each other and making them into independent and even interdependent behaviour styles. Thus generating a framework containing millions of human reaction modes that can be transformed by using different techniques, into a smaller, more usable quantity.

The DISC profile demonstrates a straightforward description and exploration of an individual’s natural reaction mode to the stimuli in the environment. The Extended DISC® System identifies some 160 different behavioural styles, which allows an individual to be more flexible and dynamic in his or her behaviour.

Extended DISC does not limit a person’s possibilities to develop in other directions or work environments. It does not classify people into good or bad. Extended DISC Theory illustrates the person’s natural behavioural style or response mode in different situations. The theory equips you with a better understanding of your own and others’ behaviour, also to adjust this behaviour to better suit the situation, avoiding unnecessary problems in communication and lastly to point one’s life onto a better suited, more enjoyable and successful path.
